How do I make make design components load quicker?

Two new caching options have been added to Impact 5.1SP4 and later - they are 'Cache thumbnails on workstation' and 'Cache component files on workstation'.

They are located on the Advanced tab of the Project Database Properties dialog (see screenshot below).

Enabling these options should provide a noticeable performance increase by storing the thumbnail images (used within the Design Component Library) locally, and also by storing the design components themselves locally.

These options should also help improve the performance of other items (Standards, Templates & Symbols) by caching the respective thumbnails and files on the workstation - as opposed to loading them from the database when the items are to be used.

The Advanced tab of the Project Database Properties dialog may be accessed via Options>Environment>Workstation>Database Connections.

Simply select the current connection and click Change to display the tab.

Tick the required boxes and click OK.

Note that certain end-users may not have the required privileges to access the Advanced tab via the above route.

In this case, the Advanced tab may be access via the yellow Connection Manager at the login screen - this route is valid for all users.

Simply click the Connection Manager icon to display the Impact Options dialog box.

Select the current connection and click Change to display the tab.

Tick the required boxes and click OK to close the Project Database Properties dialog.

Click OK to close the Impact Options and return to the login screen.
