What's New in Impact 2024

Overview

Impact 2024 delivers a powerful range of enhancements to streamline design workflows, improve collaboration, and increase precision. The new Waste Planner simplifies diecutting preparation by automatically identifying and classifying waste areas, with clear visualisation and flexible options to ensure accuracy and efficiency. Enhancements to Smart Snap put designers in full control of snapping behaviour, delivering a more predictable and reliable drawing experience. Updates to revision management introduce finer control over project updates, including layer-specific comments and new automation for layout revisions, while improvements to 3D tools bring cleaner visuals and a better user experience.

With these advancements, Impact 2024 gives designers and diemakers the tools they need to work faster, smarter, and with greater collaboration.

Waste Planner

The new Waste Planner in Impact brings clarity to the tool ordering process, helping packaging manufacturers define and communicate waste areas with greater accuracy. This innovative tool streamlines the traditionally manual and disconnected process of marking waste, ensuring all stakeholders work from a consistent and reliable reference.

At the heart of the Waste Planner is the ability to configure multiple Master Tool Settings tailored to different types of jobs and manufacturing processes. These settings are applied automatically, detecting and categorising waste areas as stripped or retained based on predefined preferences. This ensures consistent results across all layouts and reduces the need for manual adjustments.

Clear and Intuitive Waste Visualisation

The Waste Planner uses distinct colours to identify different types of waste, making it easy to distinguish stripped areas from retained ones. Initially, different colours help visualise detected waste locations; side waste, back waste, internal carton waste, internal sheet waste, etc. The output provides simplified colour system focuses on stripped and retained waste, ensuring a clean and clear view for sending to tool supplies. This clarity enhances confidence in the process and eliminates confusion during waste classification.

Added Clarity with Colour-coded Waste Areas

Clear Stripped and Retained Waste on Output

Efficient Waste Identification and Numbering

The tool automatically detects all waste areas - whether internal or perimeter - and assigns unique identifiers to stripped waste. These identifiers, which can include numbers, letters, or symbols, can be printed directly on the sheet. This feature is invaluable for tracking and resolving manufacturing issues, allowing production teams to pinpoint the exact location of any problem during diecutting.

Once waste areas are defined, the Waste Planner generates precise outputs ready for diemakers. Whether numbering, hatching, or other markings are required, the tool makes it simple to provide diemakers with all the information they need to create high-quality stripping tools, eliminating errors and ensuring the tooling is perfectly aligned with expectations. By automating waste detection, classification, and visualisation, the tool reduces time spent on manual processes and improves the quality of the information provided.

Stripping Knives Now Available for Designer Professional Licences

The existing Stripping Knives tool is now included with all Designer Professional licences, making it easier for design teams to indicate where waste should be stripped from a layout. By improving accuracy and reducing manual effort, this addition complements the Waste Planner tool, further streamlining the process of tool ordering.

Project Update and Revision Simplification

Revisions just got smarter and simpler in Impact, making your workflows more efficient and flexible than ever. Whether you’re tracking design approvals, managing project updates, or streamlining layout changes, these new features bring clarity and control to your revision processes.

Capture Every Revision from the Start

A new Database Operation option, "Create revision with geometry on first project save," ensures that the very first instance of a drawing is recorded as a revision. This feature allows all workflows—whether for internal tracking or formal approval processes—to benefit from a consistent and traceable revision history. For those using approval workflows, it adds the ability to store and reference approval outcomes directly against the initial revision, enhancing clarity and organisation.

Layer-Specific Revision Comments

Designers now have the ability to add comments for individual layers, creating a clear and detailed record of changes throughout the revision cycle. This feature is particularly valuable for multi-part projects, where tracking modifications to specific layers is essential. Revision comments can be added or updated directly in the layer properties or during the project update process. For added flexibility, administrators can configure whether these comments are required, ensuring consistency in how changes are documented.

Streamlined Project Updates

Updating projects has never been easier. We’ve removed unnecessary confirmation dialogs and consolidated change history options into a single page. Administrators can now mandate project revision comments to ensure all changes are properly documented. We've also separated the general "Release" option in the Project Browser into Update and Discard options to match the main menu options.

Automatic Layout Revision Increments

A new optional setting, "Layers containing modified layers should be flagged as revised," automates layout revision tracking. If you modify a one-up design that’s already part of a layout, the layout revision will now increment automatically. This ensures all associated layouts reflect the latest design changes without manual intervention.

Greater Control Over Revisions

For organisations that require stricter change control, administrators can now prevent users from overwriting the latest revision by disabling the new "Replace last revision" user privilege. By default, this option is turned on during upgrade (the previous system default), ensuring no immediate changes to existing workflows.

Simplify Your Revision Workflow

Not every customer needs granular layer revision tracking. With a combination of user privileges and a new Database Operation option, the entire Layer Revision mechanism can be disabled for a simpler configuration. For users of the Simple Database Operation, optional fields and consolidated forms allow projects to be saved and closed with minimal effort, while still capturing essential details.

Configurable Smart Snap and Other Snap, Nudge and Grid Enhancements

Designers now have enhanced control over snapping behaviour in Impact, ensuring new geometry aligns precisely where you want it. These updates minimise unintended snaps, providing a more predictable and efficient experience when drawing and editing designs.

The Smart Snap tool now gives users full control over what snap modes are active. From end points to midpoints, intersections, and insertion points, every key snap mode can be tailored to meet your needs. Configure these options easily in the existing Snap Settings MTS, where you can create multiple predefined setups for different tasks.

Need to make adjustments on the fly? The Draw > Snap > User Settings menu lets you override Snap Settings at any time, while assigning hotkeys to Snap Settings makes switching between modes quick and seamless.

The newly renamed Insertion Point snap mode has been expanded to offers greater versatility. Previously, this mode allowed snapping to block and symbol insertion points. Now, it also supported snapping to text entities, making it easier to align and position your geometry with precision.

Grid and Nudge Settings: Simplified and Streamlined

To improve clarity and consistency, Grid and Nudge settings have been moved from Snap Settings to a new dedicated page in Options > Environment. Hotkeys for each mode are displayed alongside their options, ensuring a smooth experience no matter which Snap Settings you use.

New Nudge Settings Toolbox

The introduction of the Nudge Settings Toolbox makes it easy to access and override nudge settings as needed. You can find this convenient toolbox under Windows > Standard Toolboxes > Nudge Settings, giving you the flexibility to fine-tune your workflow with ease.

Expanded Snap Settings Toolbox

The Snap Settings Toolbox has been significantly upgraded to provide full control over Snap Settings. Previously limited to a handful of overrides, the toolbox now lets you modify any Snap Setting directly—eliminating the need to create numerous variations and streamlining your workflow.

Other 3D Enhancements

Enhancements to 3D PDF Export: Improved Viewing Experience

Impact’s 3D PDF exports now support a single-page layout by default, ensuring your designs are displayed in a cleaner, more user-friendly format.

Previously, exported 3D PDFs opened in Adobe Reader’s continuous scrolling mode, often requiring users to manually adjust the view to fit the page or find the content they needed. With this update, the creator of the file can now control the default viewing mode, so 3D PDFs open in a full-page, single-page layout—no scrolling required.

This enhancement streamlines the viewing experience for both internal teams and clients, ensuring your designs are presented as intended right from the start. It’s another small step that makes a big difference, complementing the recent advancements to Interactive 3D PDFs and bringing Impact in line with industry standards.

UI Enhancement: Simplified 3D Layer Properties

To improve clarity and reduce confusion, the "Unable to Load Reference" icon and text in the 3D Layer Properties dialog will now only appear when a reference is genuinely missing. Previously, this icon was always displayed, even when the 3D Layer was functioning correctly, leading to unnecessary customer concerns.

Expanded Functionality for 3D Scene Templates: Cameras, Animations and More

Impact's 3D Scene Templates are evolving to offer even greater flexibility and efficiency. With support for storing cameras—and by extension, camera animations—designers can now create richer, more dynamic templates. This update doesn’t stop there; templates are being extended to handle animations of all kinds, including lights, objects, and even folding models, making them true all-in-one solutions for reusable 3D content.

This enhancement makes Scene Templates a powerful tool for streamlining 3D workflows, enabling designers to craft complex, reusable scenes with ease while maintaining the flexibility needed to tailor each project to perfection.

Enhanced Ease of Use: Record Frame Icon in the Animation Editor

The Animation Editor now features a dedicated Record Frame icon, making it faster and more intuitive to capture key frames. This improvement reduces reliance on the context menu, which can sometimes lead to errors like clicking the wrong frame or disturbing existing keyframes. While hotkeys remain available for power users, the addition of a visual icon caters to those who prefer a mouse-driven workflow, ensuring a smoother and more accessible animation process for everyone.

Active Status for Coordinate Systems in 3D

Impact's 3D environment now makes it easier to work with coordinate systems by clearly indicating the active status of the currently selected option. Whether you're using the Object Coordinate System or the User Coordinate System, you can now see which one is active directly in the 3D > Coordinate System menu.

Diemaking Enhancements

Symbol Pattern Attributes

The Dieboard tool and similar features in Impact that place symbol patterns now include a new perpendicular locking mode. This addition enhances the precision and flexibility of symbol placement, ensuring that selected symbols can be locked at a right angle to existing geometry.

Hotkey Support for Improved Workflow Efficiency

Impact’s latest update introduces hotkey support across several essential tools, significantly improving workflow efficiency and reducing reliance on menus or repetitive clicks.

  • Scrap Knife Tool: Switching between modes in the Scrap Knife tool is now quicker and more intuitive with hotkey functionality, streamlining the process and addressing customer feedback about excessive clicking.
  • Matrix Creator: This comprehensive tool, which includes features such as Create Profile, Glue Assist, Delamination, Add Matrix, Remove Matrix, and more, now allows users to navigate and activate these functions effortlessly with hotkeys. This enhancement makes it easier to manage complex designs while minimising interruptions to your workflow.
  • Rubber Creator: Hotkeys have also been added to the Rubber Creator, providing improved control over view modes, edit modes, and its suite of tools. This update ensures a smoother experience when working with rubber components, making it easier to fine-tune designs with precision.

These improvements bring a consistent and efficient hotkey experience across Impact’s tools, helping users complete tasks faster and with fewer interruptions. Whether managing detailed designs in the Matrix Creator, refining layouts with the Scrap Knife, or working with rubber components, these enhancements make an immediate difference in day-to-day use.

Preview Dialog for Symbol Patterns

To improve accuracy and ease of use, a preview dialog has been added to the Pattern Attributes dialog when selecting a Symbol Pattern. With many symbol patterns to choose from—some with similar names—this new read-only pop-up allows administrators to visually preview the details of the selected pattern.

By providing a clear visual reference, this feature ensures the correct symbol pattern is chosen, helping to prevent errors and saving time during setup. This enhancement streamlines the workflow and adds confidence to the configuration process, particularly when working with complex or detailed designs.

Infer Vertical Option for Stripping Knives Tool

The Stripping Knives tool has been enhanced with a new Infer Vertical option, extending its functionality to better suit rotary dieboard designs. While the existing Infer Horizontal feature automatically places horizontal stripping knives in-line with the sides of the tooling—sufficient for most automatic machines—rotary dies often require vertical perimeter stripping knives as well.

This new option allows users to automatically place vertical knives where needed, ensuring flexibility for various die types and saving significant time during dieboard creation. By catering to the unique requirements of rotary dies, this update further enhances the versatility and usability of the Stripping Knives tool.

Enhanced Control for Automatic Bridge Symbol Placement

The automatic placement of bridge symbols for laser output has been improved to provide greater precision and control. While the existing tool applied bridge symbols to all bridges across all palette types, users can now configure exactly which palette types should include symbols.

This enhancement ensures bridge symbols are only placed where necessary, avoiding unnecessary additions to palettes like wood size or other types that don’t require symbols. By streamlining this process, designers can ensure accurate outputs for laser cutting while keeping the layout clean and focused on the relevant manufacturing requirements.
