Impact 2024 now released, bringing with it a host of new features. Details here.

Installing the Impact Viewer

This article will show how to install the Impact Viewer which allows view-only access to a live impact database.

*This article assumes that the database has already been prepared for remote access

Step 1 – Viewer Install

Double-click the viewer installer.

Please note that the Viewer version must be identical to your Impact version.

Select the required installer language and click

Click Next

Accept the license agreement

Pick Anyone who uses this computer (or Only for me if preferred) and click Next

Accept the default file path (or click Browse to redirect if required)

Tick Add Shortcut to desktop to create a desktop icon

Click Finish

Step 2 – Create Database Connection

Create an ADO database connection to a SQL Server database.

Launch the Impact Viewer.

Right click on the Queries node and select Add Connection.

Click the Database Connection Manager icon

Click Add

Provide a name for your connection and select a connection type. The above shows an ADO connection which is used the most with Impact Viewer.

If you have access to an ADO connection string from Impact you can copy and paste the ADO sting into the Connection field.

You can also use the Setup button to build a Connection string:

Pick Microsoft OLE DB Provder for SQL Server

Use the Test Connection button to confirm the details entered are correct, then click ok.

Tick Use Master Tool Settings from this connection.

This example is connecting as GUEST, this allows multiple connections without a username and password.

Click ok and the Connection is now available.

Step 3 – Hide Files Tab

Impact Viewer shows the Database and Desktop tabs, we recommend hiding the Desktop tab. This can be done via the registry.

Click Start > Run > Regedit

Navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Arden Software Ltd > Impact > 14 > Impact Browser

Please note the folder number will be different depending on the version of Impact:

14 = 2024

13 = 2023

12 = 2022

11 = 2019

10 = 2016

To disable the Desktop tab set the ViewerHideFiles value to 1 and click ok.

Restart the Impact Viewer.
