Line Perpendicular Offset

Edit Bar controls: Interactive, Construction Line, Mode, Offset, Line Length, Create Duplicate Entities, Palette Group, Palette.

This tool allows you to create a line perpendicular to an existing line or arc. The length of the new line can be specified, or the new line can be an infinite construction line.

Interactive - this option allows you to pick the length of the new line, rather than entering a line length.

Overrun - the length of the line will be extended by the specified Overrun distance. This option is only available when the Interactive option is checked

Construction Line - determines if the lines are to be construction lines or drawn in the current palette.

Mode - this determines the mode used to create the line.

  • Fixed Length Through End - creates the perpendicular line at a position offset from the end point of the chosen line. The length of the line is specified by the Line Length value. The offset distance is specified by the Offset value.
  • Fixed Length Through Point - creates a flexible line at the cursor position, perpendicular to the chosen line. Move the cursor and pick the position of the new line, using a snap mode or lock modifier if appropriate. The length of the line is specified by the Line Length value.
  • Fixed Length Through Snap Point - creates the perpendicular line at a position offset from any snap point along the chosen entity. The length of the line is specified by the Line Length value.

Line Length - determines the length of the perpendicular line. You can either enter the required length on the edit bar or use the Nudge keys to adjust the length interactively.

Select the Edit Bar options and pick the existing line or arc you wish to create a line perpendicular to.

Constraint Manager

If you have the Constraint Manager active whilst using this tool you will experience the following differences:

  • A perpendicular constraint is added between the new line and the clicked line, or a normal constraint is added between the new line and the clicked arc
  • A coincident constraint is added if the line is snapped to an existing entity
  • In Interactive mode, if Overrun is zero, a coincident constraint is added between the end of the new line and the second clicked entity
  • In Non-interactive mode a linear dimension is added on the first use of a particular length or if the Shift modifier is used - an equal length constraint is added on multiple use
  • In Non-interactive mode, when using Fixed length through end mode and the new line is offset from the end of an existing line, a linear dimension is added on the first use of a particular distance - an equal distance constraint is added on multiple use
