The Dimension Expressions button under the Variables tab toggles the visibility of dimensions on a parametric between the actual measurement and the applied variable.
When the Dimension Expressions button is highlighted then the variable are shown on any dimension that has one applied in the layer.
NOTE: This does not change the properties of the dimension and it will still resize when recomputed even if the dimensions are showing the measurement.
